Rain Delays Opening Of New St. Teresa Of Calcutta School

The Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board says staff and students at St. Teresa of Calcutta will have to wait until the end of October to enter their new school.

"They're running a little bit behind through no fault of their own," says spokesman Stephen Fields. "We've lost about 36 construction days due to rainfall."

The board started construction on St. Teresa after choosing to close St. Jules and St. Bernard last year. Students from those two schools were expected to combine to make up the student body at the new school this September.

For the time being, the students are attending classes at St. Bernard, next door to the facility under construction.

"It's not too bad," says Fields. "It's not the first time that we've had to do this. So what you do is you set up temporary classrooms in the gymnasium and the library -- So, we've got three classes in the gymnasium. That's a Grade 5, a Grade 5/6 split and a Grade 6 class. Then we've got four primary classes down in the library space. It's not unlike an open concept."

Most of the exterior work is done at St. Teresa of Calcutta and the work is now focused on the inside of the building.

The delay in construction is not expected to add to the $8.5-million cost of the building.
