More Ward Boundary Engagement Needed In Essex

Essex Town Council is urging the public to get more involved in their ward boundary changes.

It says the public response has been poor considering how it will impact future elections and representation on the council.

With the deputy mayor now being elected at large, the options are to elect five councillors instead of six, in either four wards or five wards.

Councillor Sherry Bondy does not think the recommendations are a good fit for the town.

"Big changes in Ward 1. You're either going to vote for one rep or two.  That's big. Big changes in Ward 3. You're either going to have two reps or one rep.  That's big.  This is big," says Bondy.

A special council meeting will be held September 11 at 4:30pm at town hall to review the recommendations, and the final report can be found at the town's website.

Essex residents are also being urged to e-mail their councillors with their ideas.

Bondy fears people do not like the options.

"A lot of red flags. I feel like it's rushed," she says. "I know we're not going to get high public feedback no matter what we do, but I'm certainly not happy with this mediocre response we've had from the public.

"Stop accepting mediocre public response and public feedback. I feel, and I think a lot of people know, that this is one of the biggest, if not the biggest issue that Essex Council will deal with this term," she says.
