Rainfall Records Smashed

It will come as no surprise, rainfall records fell in Windsor over the last two days.

Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says official rainfall amounts from Environment Canada's observation sites are actually much lower than what many volunteer networks recorded.

The two day total recorded at Windsor Airport was only 100 mm. On Monday, 57.4 mm was recorded breaking the previous record of 43.2 mm set back in 1961. On Tuesday, the airport recorded 42.6 mm of rain also breaking the previous record of 36.3 mm set in 1969.

Coulson says obviously the airport area did not get the full brunt on the rainfall. He says there is a volunteer network Environment Canada relies on for other figures and many of those sites recorded much higher rainfall amounts.

"The overall amounts from some of those sites are incredible, there was one volunteer observation site in the LaSalle area, they came in with a two day total somewhere around 290 mm," says Coulson.

He says the good news is the area should get a little bit of a break from the rain, at least until the weekend when we may see some of the remnants of Tropical Storm Harvey. But Environment Canada is not predicting any heavy rainfall at this time.
