Brown Displeased With UW Expansion Snag

Ontario's opposition leader is not happy about a lack of funding to expand his alma mater's law school.

In a statement sent out by the Ontario Progressive Conservatives Saturday, party leader Patrick Brown criticizes the ruling Liberals for what he called backing away from a plan to help the University of Windsor move its law school into the historic Paul Martin Building on Ouellette Ave.

"I am a proud graduate of the Windsor law school and it's hard not to recognize that an expansion into a larger facility would be a significant boost for the university and the city," says Brown in the statement.

The university's plan to move the law school to the downtown core would have been the latest in a series of expansions into the area. UW has already relocated its School of Social Work to the former Windsor Star building. The School of Creative Arts is preparing to move to a building on the Armouries site downtown, though that project will not be ready until at least November 2017.

The university has announced that they are no longer actively pursuing the Paul Martin Building as the site for a law school expansion. UW President Alan Wildeman had told BlackburnNews.com in January 2017 that they were hoping for a $20 million contribution from the province in order to move the law school there. The building, named after the longtime MP from Windsor and father of the former prime minister, was sold by the federal government the city of Windsor for one dollar in 2015.

BlackburnNews.com has sent an email to the Ontario Liberal caucus seeking a response.
