Deflation Dooms Amherstburg Ducky

It was something that would not make Ernie from Sesame Street very happy.

The town of Amherstburg had hoped to welcome the World's Largest Rubber Duck to its riverfront as part of its Canuck It Up celebration, though Mother Nature apparently had other plans.

High winds throughout Saturday prevented organizers from inflating the duck, which was supposed to be the focal point of the event celebrating Canada's and Ontario's 150th birthdays.

If the high winds were not enough, inflation was made almost impossible by a tear in the duck's plastic skin, leaving the duck a deflated mess.

Despite the deflated duck, thousands of people made it down to the Amherstburg riverfront to enjoy the other attractions of the Canuck It Up festival, including the arrival of the tall ship Appledore V, which was offering deck tours. Also on the schedule for the two days of the festival is the West Coast Lumberjack Show and concerts by the Greater Windsor Concert Band.

On Sunday's schedule of events is a meet-and-greet from Windsor Spitfires goalie Michael DiPietro, recently drafted by the NHL Vancouver Canucks, a farmers' market, blockhouse tours on Boblo Island, a white works exhibit at the Gibson Gallery, and other activities.

UPDATE:  The duck was inflated without incident on Sunday morning and is up for everyone at the festival to enjoy.
