Brief Standoff Ends In Tecumseh

A man is in custody after a standoff with OPP in Tecumseh this morning.

Around 9am police received a call about a break and enter in progress near Essex County Rd. 42 and Lesperance Rd.

When police arrived the man fled on foot and was observed hiding in the treeline on the north east corner of the intersection of the residential neighbourhood. Police located the man and discovered he was carrying a hatchet. The man refused to put it down when he saw police.

The officers on scene called the OPP's mental health response unit after the man displayed signs of suffering from a mental crisis. The stand-off lasted for 45 minutes as police used de-escalation techniques to diffuse the situation.

After 45 minutes, an OPP officers used a Controlled Energy Weapon or taser. The man was taken into custody and transported to hospital for a psychological assessment.

The investigation into the break in is ongoing.
