Leamington Doctor Faces Discipline After Botched Surgery

A surgeon at Erie Shores HealthCare in Leamington faces disciplinary action from the College of Physicians and Surgeons for a surgery that went awry two years ago.

Dr. Ejaz Ahmed Ghumman resigned as chief of staff last April, but continues to work at the hospital.

A statement from hospital spokesman Bill Baker says Dr. Ghumman will "be working under a restricted certificate and will retain a College-approved Clinical Supervisor for a period of 12 months.

"In fulfilling our responsibilities for patient safety and quality medical care, the Board of Directors of Erie Shores HealthCare and the Medical Advisory Committee have reviewed the findings of the College of Physicians and Surgeons and will ensure that the issues raised are addressed and that the practice requirements for Dr Ghumman established -- are implemented and complied with."

On July 21, the college ruled Ghumman had "failed to maintain the standard of practice of the profession" and his actions constitute "incompetence."

The complaint dates back to 2015 when a female patient underwent laparoscopic surgery to remove her gallbladder.

The college heard a clip applied to the patient's cystic artery jammed unexpectedly. While Dr. Ghumman considered an open procedure, he decided to continue laparoscopically. During the operation, he expressed concern he may have placed a different clip on the common bile duct or the right hepatic artery.

Two days following the procedure, the patient complained she did not feel well, was in pain and was having trouble eating. After another three days, she said she was itchy, and her complexion was jaundiced. Her condition continued to worsen, and an ultrasound revealed the common bile duct was obstructed.

The woman was treated at a hospital in London.

An expert retained by the college provided the opinion that although the technical complication during surgery was beyond Dr. Ghumman's control, his actions following the procedure fell below the standard of practice of the profession.
