New Skateboard Feature Coming To Atkinson Park

A new skateboard bowl could be coming to Atkinson Park soon.

Council gave the Friends of Atkinson Park approval in principle so they can begin fundraising for the $120,000 project.

"This is a particular feature that does not exist in Essex County. This type of transition skating, like ramps and bowls that tends to be an avenue as skaters get older, and they start to realize that a 30-year-old, 30-year-old body isn't designed for jumping down nine stairs or big handrails," says project chair Rob Bondy.

The bowl will be named the "Barron Bowl" in honour of Ryan Barron. Barron was a Windsor man who was killed while on his skateboard in British Columbia last year. Barron was among the group of skaters who first advocated for a skate park in Atkinson Park in 2005.

"It kind of became a push within the community to build that bowl in his honour and name it the Barron Bowl. It really crystalized the support for the project," says Bondy.

Bondy says the group will begin working on a fundraising strategy immediately and hope to have the funds raised as soon as possible.
