Lakeshore Continues to Grow

The Town of Lakeshore continues to boom with new construction.

The town issued 551 building permits as of June 30, 2017. That's a increase of 30% over 2016, and a 37% increase from 2015 during the same time frame.

Councillor Steven Wilder says this show how quickly Lakeshore is growing, and he doesn't expect it to slow down anytime soon.

"It's great news, we have more residents moving to the area. Lakeshore is a place where families want to live, work and play so it's great news," says Wilder.

Permits for new single family homes make up 181 of the total permits. The town issued 10 permits for multi-family homes so far this year.

Wilder says the rate of growth is much higher than anticipated by a recent report out of the County of Essex and that could affect infrastructure dollars.

"There is some discrepancy in terms of a growth study that we've had to adopt that came from the county that indicates a population of about 40,000-41,000 by the year 203. I'm concerned with these building numbers that we're going to encroach that 41,000 by 2020 quite frankly. I'm concerned what that means in terms of planning for infrastructure for town needs but also for the official plan," says Wilder.

He's requested the building permit report be sent to the County of Essex for information.
