Windsor Unemployment Up Slightly In June

Windsor's unemployment rate inched up a bit during the month of June.

According to the figures from Statistics Canada issued Friday morning, the jobless rate in Windsor stood at 5.2% in June, up from 5% in May.

This is the second month in a row that unemployment has risen in Windsor.  The rate for April 2017 was 4.9%.

In Ontario, the jobless rate fell to 6.4% from 6.5% in May.

Nationally, unemployment in June was 6.5%, down from 6.6% in May. There were 45,000 new jobs nationwide in June, though most of them were part-time.

The metropolitan area in Canada with the highest percentage of unemployment is once again Calgary.  The jobless rate there was 8.9%, down from 9.3% in May. Peterborough's rate took a big jump, from 6.7% in May to 8.5%, second among Canadian metropolitan areas last month.

Youth volunteers practice coastal conservation

Nine young volunteers aged 11 to 17 spent three days exploring and protecting the Lake Huron coastline during the Coastal Conservation Youth Corps' inaugural program in Grand Bend from July 21 to 23.
