Bucket List Item For Birders This Month

Bird enthusiasts from around the world are flocking to Leamington this month for the "new and improved" Shorebird Celebration.

"Building on the success of our partnership with the Ontario Field Ornithologists, we have expanded the Shorebird Celebration to six days per week over a three-week period," says Danielle Breault-Stuebing, director of communications and outreach services at the Essex Region Conservation Authority. "Experts from OFO will be at the Shorebird Viewing Shelter from 3pm to 5pm Wednesday through Mondays to help guests identify these stunning creatures."

The shorebird habitat at Hillman Marsh is unique in North America offering a combination of mudflats and a resting area for migrating birds. In late winter, water levels in the marsh are reduced to create the desired habitat. Each summer wild rice is grown and harvested in the fall.

"The remaining stubble encourages organisms to proliferate and provides shore for shore and water birds each spring," explains Dave Milson of OFO. "The birds are often very close to the shoreline which makes for exceptional viewing. A large bird blind is open for visitors to photograph and study the birds."

Entrance fees are $6 per vehicle, or you can get a special birding pass.
