The Service Ontario Centre in Belle River is expected to be open by mid-July.
Lakeshore Mayor Tom Bain drove by the location Tuesday and stopped when he noticed some activity. He says he spoke to some workers at the building who told him a new operator had been selected.
"Unfortunately Service Ontario has not contacted us in any manner to let us know," says Bain.
A spokesperson from the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services has confirmed a new provider has been selected and the office is expected to open in mid-July.
"Certainly the need is there and it will save our local residents from having to go to Tilbury or the City of Windsor," says Bain.
On Tuesday, Deputy Mayor Al Fazio put forward a motion to urge the government to make the centre publicly run. The motion failed because many councillors feared it would delay the reopening of the centre.
