Several municipalities within Essex County will share more than $4.1-million in provincial funding in 2017 to update roads and sewers.
The money is part of a $60-million in funding for 55 Ontario communities, which was announced in Picton on Monday by Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Minister Jeff Leal.
Of the nine local local municipalities to get funding this year, Amherstburg will receive the biggest investment at $809,205. Leamington and Lakeshore will both also get over $600,000 for infrastructure. The Town of Essex, Kingsville, LaSalle, Pelee Island, Tecumseh and the County of Essex will also receive part of this year's $60-million investment.
The funding comes as part of the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF), which was launched in 2014 to provided yearly funding for small, rural and northern communities of less than 100,000, to build and repair critical infrastructure.
The province has committed to provide up to a total of $937,082 for the reconstruction of Park St. in Amherstburg, and Tecumseh will receive up to $806,149 to renew and rehabilitate its sanitary sewer system.
Lakeshore also plans to rehabilitate West River Rd. and the intersection of Notre Dame St. and West River Rd. in Belle River. The province will provide up to $485,037 for the project.
The province has promised to triple funding for the OCIF from $100-million in 2016 to $300-million by 2019.
