First Tampon Tuesday A Success

In honour of International Women's Day, area women's shelters and food banks will receive a donation of feminine hygiene products.

The United Way and the Windsor District Labour Council came together for Tampon Tuesday, and collected hundreds of boxes of tampons and pads.

United Way Windsor Essex CEO, Lorraine Goddard says often times these types of products get overlooked when people are making donations.

"About 42% of moms are struggling to make ends meet and are faced with the challenge every month between feeding their children and buying feminine hygiene products," says Goddard.

The Windsor District Labour Council got involved in the event to highlight some of the struggles women still face in the workforce, and how they contribute to women's poverty.

"Take pay equity, women are still making 73 cents on the dollar, they have to work until April 16 of the following year to make the same as the average man, and some of our most vulnerable women have more struggles with that," says Michelle Johnson with WDLC.

Tampon Tuesday events have been held in Canadian cities like London and Kitchener but this is the first time the event was held in Windsor.
