WRH Receives One-Time Funds

The Erie St. Clair LHIN is giving Windsor Regional Hospital one-time funds to help alleviate costs from increased occupancy levels.

The board approved $500,000 in funding for the hospital at the last board meeting.

The hospital has been dealing with over capacity since December. On average they have had 37 patients admitted above capacity but at one point they were 60 patients above capacity.

"Essentially they've had unfunded beds where they've placed individuals who are in need of acute care where they've had a shortage of beds. This helps them with those additional costs they've incurred," says Ron Sheppard

At a news conference February 8 Windsor Regional Hospital CEO David Musyj estimated the capacity issue had already cost the hospital upwards of $2-million.

Sheppard says the LHIN is developing a plan to address the issue moving forward.

"We had been working prior to this year's surge to build additional capacity but we need to do a little bit more in light of the population and projections around aging," says Sheppard.

The LHIN says the funding is also for the expenses the hospital incurred fixing its sterilization equipment at Ouellette campus last June.
