Life Sentence In Kaake Murder

Matthew Brush has been handed a life sentence in prison with no eligibility of parole for 22 years.

Justice Bruce Thomas sentenced Brush after hearing evidence on the "senseless" crime he committed.

In December 2014, Cassandra Kaake was seven months pregnant when she came home to discover Brush naked in her apartment. In an attempt to cover up his embarrassing obsession with women's underwear, Brush brutally murdered Kaake, leaving 45 wounds on her body.

Brush was arrested in February of 2015, and was originally charged with first degree murder.  He pled guilty to second degree murder, sparing the court and the family a full trial.

Thomas acknowledge that Brush "butchered" Kaake and "rendered lifeless her female fetus" taking into account her vulnerability as a pregnant woman.

Crown attorney Belinda Pagliaroli says the judge considered all things before rendering his decision and that's all you can ask for.

"He listened to the allegations which were difficult for everyone in that room to hear and he came back with a very considered, thoughtful decision," said Pagliaroli.

Thomas also acknowledged Brush's expression of remorse in the courtroom Friday when he issued his sentence on Monday.

"Your articulate comments continue to focus on you, your burden, your sorrow," said Thomas. "You have left a trail of broken lives in your wake."

Brush also received a five-year sentence on the arson charge, which will be served concurrently. His sentence begins February 4, 2015, when he was first arrested. Brush will be able to apply for parole after 22 years, but could spend the rest of his life in prison.
