Construction is underway for the Great Canadian Flag project.
The project will see a 150 ft flag pole erected at the base of Ouellette Ave. with a 60 ft by 30 ft Canadian flag.
The project has been funded through community donations and a Canada150 grant. The group is hoping to raise another $60,000 in donations for a legacy fund for to purchase future flags.
Organizer Peter Hrastrovec says construction will last until April because of the complicated nature of the process.
"We have to go down 30-40 ft and make sure there's a good foundation, because the wind shear alone on this flag is going to be somewhat demanding," says Hrastrovec.
Hrastrovec says the flag should be in place to celebrate Windsor's 125 birthday, and will definitely be flying on Canada Day -- Canada's 150th birthday.
"[The project] has created a tremendous amount of pride in who we are as Canadians and that's what it's all about. This flag is not going to say anything, it's not going to have any fancy signage on it. It's the flag itself. It says so much," says Hrastrovec.
