Girl Impaled With Golf Club Returns To School

A Windsor teen, who was impaled in the head with a sawed-off golf club, is finally back at school.

Madison Arseneault was discharged from the hospital just before Christmas and returned to class after the holiday break.

Last May, the girl was running with her gym class from Gordon McGregor Public School at the Ford Test Track, when she tripped over a wire marking a field. A sharpened golf club then punctured the back of her skull.

City staff were using the golf club to mark lines on the field.

At the time, Executive Director of Parks Phil Roberts told BlackburnNews.com that crews had been using recycled golf clubs for decades. After the accident, Parks staff switched to thicker and more visible lines, added extra staff during those operations and posted signs warning those in parks to stay off the field.

The lawyer representing the Arseneault family, Jennifer Bezaire, says Madison graduated Grade 8 and now attends classes at a local high school.

"She's only able to tolerate two hours a day in class though so, she's only there part-time right now," says Bezaire.

The teen continues to suffer pain and paralysis on the left side of her body. She also has vision and cognitive challenges. Despite her physical condition, Bezaire says Madison is adjusting.

"Honestly, she's an amazing young lady," she says. "She's coping well, or as well as can be expected. It is a struggle. She's trying her best to do as much as possible and continue with her rehab despite the pain, but it is taxing on her, and it's very taxing on her family. She does still require that 24-hour care."

Meanwhile, Bezaire expects to file a Statement of Claim in the lawsuit filed against the City of Windsor, and the Greater Essex County District School Board soon.
