Canada's minister of innovation, science and economic development has announced up to $3-million in funding to create up to 70 jobs in Windsor.
The funding will support a partnership between Nemak and Arbec Tool and Machine Inc. to make a stronger engine block made of lightweight aluminium. The engine block will make cars lighter and more fuel-efficient.
The money comes from the federal government's Automotive Supplier Innovation Program, which supports research and development by small and medium-sized companies that supply the automotive industry. The fund was extended to 2020-2021 in the 2016 federal budget.
Minister Navdeep Bains made the announcement in Windsor Tuesday morning.
"If Canada is to succeed in making the cars of the future, we must embrace greener, more sustainable technologies," he says. "These technologies will create the well-paying middle-class jobs of the future."
The engine blocks will be produced by a fully automated robotic system, which is an innovation itself.
