Windsor's John McGivney Children's Centre is one step closer to building its dream playground, thanks to $50,000 from In Honour Of The Ones We Love.
Danielle Mulvey with the centre says the overall Play McGivney project is slated to cost $600,000.
"This is Canada's anniversary [in 2017], so there's a lot of large grants that we're in the running for," she explains. "We're working on those and those could really bring us up in our fundraising goal. We also did our holiday push [asking for donations]. So I think we'll have a better idea of where we are in the new year."
Half of the play structure is expected to be focussed on stimulating the senses with lights, music, nature sounds and games. The other half will be more of a jungle gym, but will be fully accessible for children with disabilities.
The centre piece will be a large swing called the Aero Glider.
"This swing or glider can fit kids in wheelchairs -- they can wheel right on from the ramps -- and then there's also room for other kids. They all kind of work together to make it move," Mulvey adds.
Construction's expected to start this spring, but the scope of the project will be determined by how much money the children's centre can raise in the coming months.
