Constable Harbinder Gill says Constable Al Gibson, a 20-year veteran of the LaSalle Police Service, was on patrol around midnight Thursday night when he noticed a lot of smoke in the area. He traced it to a home on Gignac and started pounding on the door.
Inside the home, a family of five, including seven-month-old twins was fast asleep.
"He just hoofed it right to the door and started banging on the door really hard. After several loud bangs on the door -- he rang the doorbell," says Gill. "I know when I'm sleeping, I don't get up rather quickly."
Gibson managed to get the family and their two dogs out of the home before firefighters arrived.
Gill says the fire appears to have been contained to the garage although there is smoke and water damage throughout the home.
"There might have been several things plugged into one outlet, like chargers and what have you, and that may have been the cause of the fire," says Gill.
He says the family is staying with relatives in Amherstburg.
A damage estimate has not been released.
