An off-duty 911 dispatcher gets the credit for the quick arrest of a suspect in a crime spree in Windsor.
Around 1am Tuesday, a man broke into a home in the 500-block of Giles Blvd. W. He managed to get away with some property, but the homeowner knew the suspect and was able to give police a description.
That was helpful later when a man with the same description was spotted smashing a car window a short time later.
Then around 2:45am, there were two break-ins, one right after the other, at two neighbouring homes in the 1300-block of Church St.
At the first home, an elderly woman confronted the suspect, and he got away empty-handed. But, at the second home, he was confronted again, this time by a man and there was an altercation. The suspect fled through the window.
Just after 8am, the dispatcher was headed home from the night shift when she recognized the suspect from the description in the 1400-block of Ouellette Ave. She called the police, and the man was arrested a short time later. He was allegedly in possession of property taken from the second break-in on Church St.
A 24-year-old Windsor man now faces a list of charges including break-and-enter, mischief, assault with a weapon, possession of stolen property and robbery.
Police are still investigating the incident and can not say why the homes were targeted.
