A new St. Clair College program at the Premier Aviation hangar in Windsor is guaranteeing 36 people jobs as aircraft maintenance and repair workers.
President Patti France had hoped to be able to start the 44-week program next month, but the school's now eyeing January.
"The curriculum is all ready to go. The faculty have been identified, so we're hoping that if the selection criteria is smooth then we can start the training early next year," she explains.
That selection process starts with an information session at the hangar on County Rd. 42 next Tuesday, December 6.
France expects there could be hundreds of applicants.
The overall cost of the project is $450,000. More than $290,000 of that is from the Canada-Ontario job grant. The remaining cost is split three ways between Premier Aviation, St. Clair College and the City of Windsor.
France thinks this program can become a consistent job-creator in the Windsor-Essex area.
She adds, "Originally [Premier Aviation] wanted to double the 36 [trainees] and maybe do 72 or 75. But we thought, 'Let's start small and make sure it's successful and we can go from there.'"
