WFCU Invests In Future With Student Scholarships

Students ranging from junior kindergarten to the first-year university are getting help to pay for their post-secondary education.

They've received the 2016 Harold Hewitt Scholarship from the Windsor Family Credit Union.

Each year, the credit union awards the scholarships and over the past 14 years, 240 youth have received $128,000. This year, $55,000 will be split among 33 students from the 360 submissions.

Submissions are reviewed by a panel of volunteers who work at Windsor Family Credit Union, and Vice-President of External Affairs, Susan Stockwell-Andrews says it's never an easy job.

"They actually send us a submission that speaks to what they feel is important in our community, and how they contribute as individuals," she says. "It's amazing, from the age of six-years-old all the way through to grade 12 students, the variety of initiatives that they become involved in, and even their mindset on things we need to be doing, or that they've done on their own."

Among those chosen this year, JK student Connor Goulet at Academie Ste. Cecile and JK student Stella Seguin at Holy Cross Elementary School. They'll each receive $1,200 towards a university of a college education.

"We understand that education can be expensive, so we like to be able to help out any way that we can," says Stockwell-Andrews. "They are invested and will earn interest over the time that the student is in grade school and high school."

Older students will receive more so that by the time they start post-secondary education; they can put $2,000 toward the cost.

The scholarship program was started in 2001.
