Humane Society Launching TNR Program

The Windsor-Essex Humane Society is launching a targeted trap-neuter-return program thanks to a bequest to the organization.

The program involves trapping free-roaming cats, altering and vaccinating them, and returning them to their locations.

Shelter Operations Manager, Rachel Dottermann says the program helps to manage the population of stray cats.

"If you can get 75-80% or more, the colonies numbers tend to stabilize, and they are not increasing over time," says Dottermann.

The first part of the program will focus on the east end neighbourhood bordered by Lauzon Rd., Tecumseh Rd. E, and Hawthorne and Meadowbrook Lane.

They will set up baited traps for a week to desensitize the cats in the area, and then trap as many cats as possible during a specified period. After the cats are neutered and recovered, they will be returned to the area.

The humane society asks residents not to tamper with the traps.
