Controversial Ad Doesn't Hurt Adoption Sale

Despite the controversy over an ad campaign launched late last week, the Windsor-Essex County Humane Society declares its weekend adoption sale a success.

The ad was a play on words and made reference to a comment by Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump who was recorded in 2005 making comments about groping women.

Some felt the ad made light of sexual assault, but Executive Director Melanie Coulter says that was never the intent.

"We really try to do things that are relevant and sometimes funny," she says. "Definitely, it's possible to miss the mark."

Coulter admits she wasn't sure how successful the sale was going to be.

"We were actually having a lot of people saying that they understood that our intent was to try and get cats adopted, so they really wanted to help us reach that goal regardless of the controversy," she says.

Ultimately, 62 cats found new homes, along with 18 dogs, four rats, a mouse, two guinea pigs and a bird.

As for the next ad campaign, Coulter doubts it'll raise many eyebrows.

"We're going for something really non-controversial."
