As the strike deadline approaches, Unifor says Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has made no firm commitments and is resisting the pattern reached in the contract reached with General Motors.
The next update is scheduled at 10:30pm. Regular updates on contract negotiations are being provided by @AutoTalks16, and are embedded below this story.
Unifor Director of Communication, Denise Hammond says there is no agreement for future investment in Canadian plants in Windsor, Etobicoke and Brampton, no agreement on wages, and no agreement on the higher progression grid, all of which is part of the pattern set in talks with General Motors.
"There is no way we will go backwards," read Hammond from a statement. "Our union is concerned with the direction of the company's proposal."
If the two sides can not reach a deal by the 11:59pm deadline, workers are expected to strike as of 12:01am Tuesday. Strike action will take place at the Windsor Assembly Plant, at the research and development facility and the waste treatment plant.
In the meantime, local Unifor members are cautiously optimistic a deal can be reached between the union and Fiat Chrysler.
"Hopefully we can continue to build mini-vans Tuesday morning, continue to make a pay cheque for our families, and continue to make a profit for the corporation," says Strike Marshall Frank Mosey.
"Whether you're a new member, have been there for 30 years or somewhere in the middle, obviously our bargaining committee is working hard right now in order to get investments and keep the footprint in Canada and if we want job security then we have to stand behind them in solidarity," says Strike Coordinator Sandra Dominato.
"We're telling our members to work til the deadline; we're going to have all of our union representation on the floor and to listen to what their union reps are saying. In the event of a strike we want them to put their tools down and exit the plant in an orderly fashion," says Dominato. Tweets by AutoTalks16
