Students Continue To Struggle With Math

EQAO results show student literacy in the region remains on track but math continues to give students problems in both the public and Catholic school boards.

However, students at the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board did surpass the provincial average in all categories.

Results for the Catholic board show more students at the Grade 6 level fell behind the provincial standard than at the Grade 3 level. Where 65% of students passed the provincial standard in math in Grade 3 only 55% passed that level in Grade 6.

Heather Best with the board says this tells them they need to figure out where students are dropping off and strategies how to improve those skills.

"What I think we need to do is continue to see how it all pieces together, see the threads through the strands in math and making sure that those building blocks are in place through Grade 3 and Grade 6," says Best.

The percentage of Grade 3 students at the Greater Essex County District School Board who scored at or above the provincial standard in math is 58%. That compares to 63% province-wide. In Grade 6, 48% achieved the standard. Across Ontario, 50% did.

As for reading at the Grade 3 level 67% of students at the GECDSB and 84% of students at the WECDSB met or exceeded the provincial standard. Provincially 81% of Grade 3 students met the standard. At the Grade 6 level 76% of students at both the GECDSB and the WECDSB met or surpassed the provincial standard. Provincially 72% of students met the standard.

In writing at the Grade 3 level 69% of students at the GECDSB and 78% of students at the WECDSB met or exceeded the provincial standard. That compares to 74% of students province-wide. At the Grade 6 level 76% of students at the GECDSB and 84% at the WECDSB met or exceeded the provincial standard. The provincial average is 80%.

Finally results of the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test remain steady for both school boards. At the GECDSB 80% of Grade 10 students passed the test on the first try. At the WECDSB 87% of students passed the test on the first try. That's compared to 81% province-wide.
