When it gets up to 42C (107F) in the humidity, an official with the Greater Essex County District School Board admits there is a concern about health and safety at area schools.
As students returned to the classroom this week, some are doing what they can to beat the heat in older schools that have no air-conditioning.
However, Scott Scantlebury also says this is Windsor-Essex and the heat is nothing new.
"We're used to this," he says. "We've become adept at dealing with these conditions and we're rolling with it."
He says administrators did a good job communicating to teachers and parents that a heat wave was expected for the first couple of days of school. Parents are advised to make sure their child is dressed in light-weight clothing and has a water bottle.
A teacher who wished not to be identified told BlackburnNews.com it was 33C (91.4F) in his classroom.
"Some teachers have chosen to their classes outside into shaded areas," says Scantlebury. "Some good shade can drop the temperature of an area by up to 15 to 20 degrees."
The forecast from Environment Canada suggests it may cool down Friday.
