Following two tornadoes late last month, the Windsor-Essex Economic Development Corporation is moving up a seminar meant to teach business leaders what to do in the aftermath of a disaster.
"In our region, where we do a lot of just-in-time manufacturing, we don't have inventories and storage," says Director of Business Retention and Expansion Lee McGrath.
That means businesses may find themselves unable to meet the demands of the market place.
McGrath says once it's known everyone is safe, business leaders need to ask if they can continue to manufacture at the same location, if they can operate off-site and how to continue supplying their customers.
Although the seminar was moved up on the calendar because of the tornadoes, McGrath says the information is relevant to any disaster, including fire.
The event is in the planning stages, but McGrath says it's scheduled for October 18 at the Ciociaro Club in Oldcastle. She is still looking for a keynote speaker, but has invited economic development officers from both the City of Windsor and the Municipality of Leamington. Provincial representatives will shed light on where to access government funding.
McGrath anticipates a high turnout. She says the last seminar the corporation held on continuity planning was attended by 70 companies.
