Windsor Police Promoting Motorcycle Safety

Windsor police will be using social media over the next two weeks to make more drivers aware of motorcycle safety.

On July 15, 2016, there were two serious motorcycle collision - one of them was fatal. Though the number of accidents seen this year is not outside of the realm of normal Windsor Police Service want drivers to be aware on the roads.

"Almost every one of [the accidents] is preventable in some way," says Staff Sergeant David Kigar. "There's a perception that people don't see motorcycles and there is a certain amount of truth to that, however, there is a certain amount of somewhat carelessness by drivers, including the motorcycles themselves."

Windsor police will be using their social media channels Twitter and Facebook to send out messages to remind drivers to be aware and take caution on the roads. They will also be sharing tips on how motorcyclists can help to keep themselves safe on the roads.

Mike Bondy who teaches the St. Clair College motorcycle course says he teaches his students to expect the unpredictable behaviour of other motorists.

"We tell them to keep their head up. We know that there's a lot of people out there that have other distractions on their mind when they're riding," says Bondy. "Slow down would be the number one thing out there. Watch what you're doing and always anticipate the other driver is going to do something absolutely crazy that you never expected. But if you've got your head up, you're looking for that to happen hopefully you've scanned and identified far enough that you're going to slow down."

Bondy says he recognizes motorcyclists are not without fault.

"We've all seen the accidents, improper lane change, driving too fast for the conditions so basically everybody, please, please slow down on the roads," says Bondy.
