Tecumseh's Ward 2 by-election is set for October 14.
Council approved the dates at its regular meeting on Tuesday night and will finalize the dates at its August 9 meeting.
Mayor Gary McNamara doesn't think there will be a shortage of candidates vying for the seat — left empty by the sudden passing of the late Mike Rohrer.
"I think there will be a full slate of candidates. I mean, you hear rumours, but I'm not a rumour-type guy," says McNamara. "There will be definitely an election, it's not going to be an acclamation."
Prospective candidates have until August 30 to file their nomination papers.
McNamara says the new councillor is going to need a crash course on the issues facing the town as budget talks are set to get underway.
"The sportsplex, the CIP [community improvement plan] on Tecumseh Rd., a lot of the infrastructure requirements for the municipality," says McNamara, listing off the items facing council. "It's going to be: election, inauguration , and get to work. There's no — I call it 'the honeymoon' period — you're in the trenches."
McNamara hopes to see the 2017 budget for the town passed by December 6.
