The Town of Tecumseh is offering homeowners insurance for their sewer lines and Mayor Gary McNamara says it's a pretty sweet deal.
Town council approved a motion to endorse and promote the program by Service Line Warranties of Canada.
McNamara says for about $6 a month; homeowners can get full protection if there's a sewer line collapse on their property. He thinks it could save residents a lot of money.
"What happens, tree roots get into sewers, your storm gets plugged up then you call the town," he says. "If it's on their property line the cost is up to $6,000 to $8,000 to do that repair work."
The program started in Canada two years ago but is already in use elsewhere.
"Hamilton did about a year of due diligence. This is big in the United States. This is relatively new coming into Canada, and now we're starting to see more and more municipalities getting on board," says McNamara.
He says there's no cost to the taxpayer and the company contracts out local plumbers.
