The City of Windsor wants to help prevent future layoffs at Nemak.
The plant, which makes cylinder blocks for General Motors, recently laid off 59 workers after announcing it was ending production on one product. It is hoping to land another to take its place and applied for grant money under the city's Community Improvement Plan. It's also applied for federal funding.
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens says the city has agreed to supply Nemak with $1.3-million over five years to maintain employment, but the agreement is only good if the company can land new product. There could also be a penalty if Nemak fails to live up to its end of the bargain.
"We have to sort out, negotiate all those fine details, but I would imagine if they don't meet it [employment] any certain year, the money wouldn't flow."
Nemak has 160 workers now but hopes to boost that to 340 by the end of 2019.
