An official with the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board says layoff notices have gone out to 70 elementary school teachers, but most will be called back.
"Depending on how many retirements and how many changes we get over the summer, it's very hard to predict right now," says Executive Superintendent of Human Resources, Terry Lyons. "But we know there will be additional bodies that will be called back to work."
Lyons says the board is obligated to send out the notices today under the collective agreement, but the board won't know how many teachers it needs until reorganization day in September.
The layoffs go into effect at the end of the school year.
Last year, the board issued 130 layoff notices, but Lyons says only ten or so were actually off work.
The layoffs don't affect secondary school teachers.
