Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens says a hateful email he received helps to punctuate the importance of events promoting an inclusive community.
After attending a vigil Wednesday for the victims of the Orlando mass-shooting Dilkens received an email "where the person was actually congratulating the shooter for killing 49 people in Orlando"
"It kind of dumbfounded me," said Dilkens. "This is a perfect example of why we came together for the vigil. It's a perfect example of why folks in our community are asking for acceptance, asking to be included and this is someone in our community who is exemplifying all of the traits that we're hoping to erase."
Dilkens says normally he would delete emails like this but thought it was important to show the community why events like the vigil are needed in the community.
"I think it's important the community understands that these are the types of behaviours, the types of thoughts and beliefs that we're looking to eradicate . We're trying to be an inclusive community, we're trying to be an accepting community," says Dilkens. "Trying to recognize at the end of the day that we're all one, we drink the same water, we breathe the same air and we're all together in this and it's important that as a community we continue to stand strong and stand together."
