When word got around that a popular teacher at Catholic Central High School in Windsor had suffered a family tragedy, the phone started ringing.
Teacher Mike Mallen was on a trip with his family in North Dakota when both his son and daughter suffered injuries in an ATV crash. While his son was treated and released from the hospital, his daughter, Maddie suffered critical injuries. She was just transferred to Windsor Regional Hospital this week and has a long road to recovery.
In an attempt to help the Mallens, and the costs of Maddie's rehabilitation, the school is holding a concert this afternoon featuring Christian Vegh.
But fellow teacher Jason George says it didn't stop there. The phone lit up with members of the community and colleagues across the city who wanted to help.
"Naturally when somebody experiences something like this, you want to be able to assist," says George. "We were inundated with phone calls from people saying what can we do to contribute."
So the school decided to hold a second concert in its auditorium, open to the public, tonight. The event, which starts at 7pm, will not only feature Christian Vegh but also Love Razer and Big Louie and the Band. The bands are playing free of charge so all the proceeds can help the Mallen family.
The suggested donation at the door is $15.
