Former Senator Eugene Whelan's house in Amherstburg is up for sale.
The home was the site of a historic meeting between Whelan and the then Soviet agriculture minister Mikhail Gorbachev, who later became the president of the Soviet Union. That meeting in the orchard is widely considered the start of the end of the Cold War.
Despite its place in history, Amherstburg Mayor Aldo DiCarlo says it's unlikely the town will buy the property.
"Unfortunately, the town is not in a financial position to be buying up property like that, as it becomes available."
Town council decided to place a plaque on the site commemorating the meeting, but DiCarlo isn't sure where that effort stands now.
"I guess it's something we'll have to talk [to the new owners] about."
The family has listed the four-bedroom, five bathroom home on Front Rd. separately for $579,000 and with an attached parcel of land for $895,000. Realtor Chuck Roy says he's had a couple of inquiries, but admits higher priced properties often take longer to sell.
