Ground may have broken on fewer single-detached homes last month, but Windsor more than made up for the shortfall with a huge jump in multi-unit housing starts.
Construction started on 122 townhomes, fourplexes, and apartment buildings in May compared to just 19 in the same month last year. That is an increase of 640%.
So far this year, single-detached housing starts are up 55% over 2015, while multi-unit starts are up 229%.
Provincially, starts were down 19% in May compared to May 2015, and down 7% nationally. The year-to-date figures from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation show just a 7% increase across Ontario and only 2% across the country.
