The Windsor-Essex County Humane Society is holding its first ever "Fee Waived Adoption Event" tonight.
From 6pm to 8pm adoption fees on all cats older than five months will be waived. The adoption fee for kittens is on special at $99.
Executive Director Melanie Coulter says the promotion is timed with what she refers to as "cat season."
"This is when so many kittens are coming in and they're looking for homes and our adoption centre is getting crowded," says Coulter. "We thought, 'You know we want to get these guys into homes as quickly as possible.'"
Coulter says getting rid of the adoption fee doesn't mean the cats aren't going to good homes.
"The animals that are adopted during these reduced fee promotions, unlike what we used to think and what a lot of people still may think that, 'Oh, they're not going to take care of them,' what we really find is that these animals do just as well, are just as loved," says Coulter.
There's still a $30 administration fee attached to each adoption, but Coulter stresses each cat will still come checked by a veterinarian, spayed or neutered and vaccinated along with a number of other health checks despite the special discount.
