Community cyclists are applauding the County of Essex for taking steps to increase safety on county roads.
"We're so thrilled with what the county has been doing. The infrastructure that they've put in to connect their communities and within their municipalities is exciting," says Executive Director of Bike Windsor-Essex Lori Newton.
In addition to spending millions of dollars on the County Wide Transportation Plan the county has joined the CAA "Watch for Bikes" awareness campaign. As part of the campaign County of Essex is adding "Watch for Bikes" decals on driver side mirrors on 45 service vehicles.
"A very simple task but a wonderful message for us to really share with our operators who do a fair amount of driving on the road network," says Tom Bateman, engineer for the County of Essex.
Newton believes this will have an impact on bike safety.
"Whether or not they're in the work vehicle when they go home after work and they're in their cars They will still have an opportunity to remember that they have to watch for cyclists," says Newton.
