Referendum Hoping To Make A Difference

Local residents want the province to spend more on health care, and are asking it to stop cutting health care-related jobs.

That's according to the results of a referendum vote taken over the weekend, which showed 99% in favour of a statement by the Windsor-Essex Health Coalition.

Chair of the Windsor chapter of the coalition Ken Lewenza Jr. says, "[Windsor-Essex has] the lowest per capita funding in [hospital] beds, lowest per capita funding in hospitals, lowest per capita funding in hands-on nursing care, and lowest per capita funding for patients."

He and his team collected more than 10,200 ballots, which will be added to thousands more collected across Ontario tomorrow when they're presented at Queen's Park.

Of those ballots, only 39 voted against the statement, which read "Ontario's government must stop the cuts to our community hospitals and restore services, funding and staff to meet our communities' needs for care."
