Vulnerable Patient Navigators To Cut EMS Wait Times

The Essex County EMS is looking to hire four paramedics to form a new vulnerable patient navigator team.

The team will assess patients using ambulance services three or more times in 12 months in an effort to connect them with resources in the community.

"Take diabetic patients for an example and their blood sugars are not in control. Once we connect them to their primary care provider and they understand that we've been to the patient three or four times in the last month the primary care provider gets their blood sugar under control and they don't use us anymore," says EMS Chief Bruce Krauter. "

Krauter says data shows there were 12,000 patients that fit the vulnerable patient criteria in 2015.

"If we can reduce those visits by 60%, that will help with off-load delays get them decreased which then will allow ambulances to be available to respond," says Krauter.

Krauter says this will help to reduce response times throughout Windsor and Essex County.
