In approving its operating budget for the next school year, the University of Windsor's Board of Governors also adopted a new model to fund faculties.
It's based on enrolment. Revenue from tuition will be divvied up according to how many students are enrolled in each faculty.
President Alan Wildeman doesn't want to call it a "winners vs. losers" scenario, but admits some programs will get more money.
"It's no secret, enrolment, for example, in engineering is way up," he says. "Enrolment in humanities is down so there will have to be some adjustments to reflect that."
The change will be slowly phased in, but the time frame hasn't been finalized. That will be reviewed during planning for the 2017-18 budget cycle.
While overall enrolment is expected to slip for the year starting in September, Wildeman says it's actually up for full-time international students. The numbers for full-time domestic students reflect similar changes at universities across the country.
The university has budgeted $257.6-million for the 2016-17 school year, a 1.5% increase over last year.
