Construction of the new Leamington District Secondary School is officially underway on 19.5 acres of land on Oak St. West just west of Sherk St.
The $32-million project includes a two storey building with 27 classrooms, science labs, a triple gym and two culinary arts rooms.
"Everybody is just over the moon, everybody is very excited," says Principal Kyle Berard. "It's been a very patient community, they've trusted the Greater Essex County District School Board to bring the process along, which has happened so everyone puts that behind us as we move forward."
The current LDSS was declared prohibitive to repair in 2007 by the Ministry of Education.
The new high school was designed by Glos Associates and is being built by the Rosati Group. It's expected to open in September 2017.
