The first edition of a new online series by the Ministry of Energy will feature the EcoSchools club at Leamington District Secondary School.
EcoSchools Ontario Executive Director Eleanor Waslander says the club at Leamington District Secondary School went above and beyond by "bringing light to the algae blooms in Lake Erie."
She says the group made its mark by bringing members of the community together to talk about how the bloom was impacting high school students and the town. Waslander says their "Algaection" campaign even caught the attention of Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki.
The group also runs a composting program that generates heat for a local greenhouse operation and created a video for the COP21 Climate Change Conference in Paris.
Energize: EcoSchool Success Stories will be used to encourage other schools across Ontario to start their own EcoSchools clubs.
"We have over 1,700 schools across the province participating, representing about 36% of the schools in Ontario," says Waslander. "We wanted to bring to light to what's happening as inspiration for other schools and other communities."
