A woman who admitted she drove a car into two men, killing one of them, will be sentenced next week.
A sentencing hearing was held Friday for Deanna Anne Gamblin, who pleaded guilty in January to charges of manslaughter and impaired driving causing bodily harm after initially being charged with second degree murder and attempted murder.
In August of 2014, Gamblin got behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated and deliberately drove at two men, killing Rafiu Kadean Rashad Azeez.
The Crown has asked for a sentence of seven to ten years because of Gamblin's high level of intoxication and her reckless disregard for human life. The defence asked the court for a sentence of six to seven years minus time served, taking into account Gamblin's Aboriginal upbringing and alcohol addiction from a young age.
When given a chance so speak in court Friday, Gamblin turned to face the family of the deceased and made a tearful apology.
"As a mother and a sibling I know how angry I would be and what I've taken from you. I'd be very angry, heart broken and unforgiving," says Gamblin. "I am really truly sorry that I hurt your family. I will always remember what I've done."
The judge is expected to announce Gamblin's sentence Thursday April 21, 2016 at 2pm.
