Chief Has Concerns On New Street Check Regulations

Windsor's police chief is worried new provincial legislation that bans officers from doing random street carding may lead to confusion for residents.

Under the new legislation coming into effect January 1, 2017, a police officer approaching someone in public must tell the individual they have the right to walk away and not answer any questions.

Police Chief Al Frederick says this could lead to confusion for other interactions with police.

"The confusion comes when there's a criminal investigation on going or a person in a vehicle. These are different circumstances and I just hope the training includes the community," says Frederick.

The chief says the police force is still waiting to hear how training for officers under the new legislation will be rolled out across Ontario.

As part of the roll out of the new legislation, the province will complete a review of its effectiveness. Frederick hopes they look at his concerns surrounding public safety while completing the review.
