Police Board Ratifies Contract

The Windsor Police Service Board and the Windsor Police Association have ratified a new five-year agreement.

The agreement was settled on without arbitration unlike the last two settlements reached between the groups.

"Obviously we have to advocate for our members and the police services board has to be a responsible employer but I think it's a respectful relationship and we're happy that we were able to negotiate a contract," says Windsor Police Association President Jason DeJong.

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens says it's good news for the board.

"Arbitration is not a cheap endeavour, it's a rather expensive endeavour, it takes times and you throw everything on the table and you don't know where you're going to end up at the end of the day so it's always better to have control of your own agreement," says Dilkens.

The agreement includes a 2.75% increase for 2015, a 1.9% increase in 2016 and 2017, a 1.8% increase in 2018 and 2% increase 2019. Some officers and communication staff will also be moved to 12-hour shifts, at the request of the membership.

"We're very satisfied and able to have labour peace through 2019," says DeJong.
