After cutting some small capital projects, LaSalle town council is asking its police service to go back over its budget.
In a bid to keep the 2016 budget increase to just 1.5%, the council cut $100,000 from capital reserves and another $90,000 from capital spending.
Mayor Ken Antaya says it didn't cut any big capital projects. He lists a $25,000 project to fix cracked ceilings in the roads department and some spending on LED lights as examples.
Any money police find in savings, will be reinvested back into capital spending.
"If they find anything then our contribution to capital will increase," says Antaya.
Antaya says councillors will keep in mind that residents expect a certain level of policing services.
"This isn't something that our council takes lightly," he says. "They recognize their responsibility to the community. They recognize what level of service that our community has come to expect."
All departments, except police, were asked to find savings during budget deliberations last month. Antaya says police weren't included in the exercise because it's overseen by the LaSalle Police Services Board.
